Edward Elgar’s “Cello Concerto in E Minor” featuring Angelyn Foster, Cellist
Patriotic Musical Review by ProMusica Arizona Chorale

"There is music in the air, music all around us, the world is full of it and you simply take as much as you require." This quote is by Sir Edward Elgar (1857 – 1934) an English Romantic period choral and orchestral composer. In celebration of Elgar’s 150th birthday, ProMusica Arizona Chorale and Orchestra is pleased to announce concerts May 12th and 19th showcasing Elgar’s hauntingly beautiful Cello Concerto in E Minor. The concerts will be held at 7:00 p.m. at Desert View Bible Church on May 12th, and Anthem Fellowship Church, May 19th.

Edward Elgar is probably most known for his Pomp and Circumstance Marches, which are often played at graduations around the world. But the Cello Concerto was one of his favorite pieces: it is said that Elgar hummed the concerto's opening theme to a friend in 1934 during his final illness, telling him, "If ever after I'm dead you hear someone whistling this tune on the Malvern Hills, don't be alarmed. It's only me." The Cello Concerto in E Minor has been recorded by such famous cellists as Jacqueline du Pré, Julian Lloyd Webber, and Yo-Yo Ma. ProMusica is pleased to have Angelyn Foster perform this demanding work for these concerts. Ms. Foster has played the cello since age 5, received her BA in cello performance from BYU, and has played with the Mormon Tabernacle Orchestra at Temple Square. Ms. Foster is the principle cellist for ProMusica, and has delighted audiences with her solos in the past.

The concerts will also feature the ProMusica Chorale performing patriotic pieces in celebration of the upcoming Memorial Day holiday. Selections will include “Song for the Unsung Hero” which was written to honor all service members who give so much to provide for our freedom, and a rousing “Armed Forces Salute” to recognize the current and past members of our Armed Forces.

ProMusica is excited to collaborate with the host churches in these outreach concerts. The May 12th concert will be held at Desert View Bible Church, located at 105 West Carefree Highway, and the May 19th concert will be at Fellowship Church, 39905 N Gavilan Peak Pkwy in Anthem. A $5 per ticket donation is suggested. Tickets for this outstanding performance are available at the door, at the churches, online at www.promusicaaz.org, and at the following locations: Andrew Z Jewelers, 3655 W. Anthem Way, Anthem Community Center, and Deer Valley Credit Union, 3428 W. Anthem Way. For more information please call 623-465-4650.
